Strip rust fast and leave clean steel that primers actually bite into.
Rust steals time and margin. Blasting rooms jam up. Wire wheels glaze and throw dust. Flash rust comes back before you can prime. Whether you’re turning fabrications, rehabbing railings, or trying to salvage a bin of rusty hardware, inconsistent prep wrecks schedules and coatings.
Rust Prep Acid is SaraWest’s no-nonsense answer. It dissolves iron oxide and micro-etches bare steel so primers anchor cleanly. Wipe, spray, or run it as an immersion bath - predictable dwell, then rinse and dry. Low foam for parts washers, steady performance across a wide temperature window, and a clean rinse that doesn’t fight your solvent-borne or waterborne coatings.
Formulated and filled in our 30,000 sq ft facility in Pampa, Texas, we’ve spent four decades tuning metal-prep chemistry for operators who measure by throughput, not buzzwords. We build it the same way under your label or ours, with tight QC and consistent lot-to-lot performance. Private label ready in 33.8 oz, 1.3 gal, and 5 gal, with contract options to match your brand spec and workflow.
- Fast oxide cut with controlled etch for primer-ready steel in one pass.
- Works wipe, spray, or immersion with predictable dwell and clean rinse.
- Low foam, low odor profile suited to indoor maintenance and parts baths.
- Minimizes abrasive blasting time and media consumption before coating.
- Rinse-clean formula compatible with solvent or waterborne primers.
Preparation: Remove loose scale, oils, and heavy soils. Use on ferrous metals only. Set up in HDPE or polypropylene tanks for immersion; avoid metal tanks.
Dilution: For heavy rust scale (immersion), start 1:1 to 1:3 with water. For light to moderate rust (wipe/spray), start 1:4 to 1:8 with water. Apply by brush, sponge, spray, or submerge parts fully.
Dwell/Agitation: At 60–90°F, light rust clears in 5–15 minutes; moderate rust 30–60 minutes immersion. Agitate or brush as needed to expose fresh surface. Do not allow to dry on the part.
Rinse/Neutralize: Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Optional: follow with a 2–5% alkaline rinse (soda ash or baking soda in water), then final water rinse. Dry completely using air knives, compressed air, or heat. Prime as soon as dry.
Compatibility: Intended for iron and steel. Not for aluminum, galvanized/zinc, magnesium, copper, or chrome - may etch or discolor. Always test a small, inconspicuous area when in doubt. Use proper PPE and ventilation.
- Light flash rust removal in 5–15 minutes at 70°F conditions.
- Moderate rust scale cleared in 30–60 minutes with immersion and agitation.
- 1:4 dilution covers approximately 250–400 sq ft per gallon applied.
- Paint-ready surface in 15–30 minutes after final rinse and dry.
- Reduced abrasive media use by up to 30% when used pre-blast.
