How to launch a private-label cleaning product in 2026
A no-nonsense operator walkthrough from someone who manufactures private-label cleaners every week.
Every week a brand founder emails us a Google Doc titled 'cleaning brand v1'. It usually contains a mood board, three fragrance ideas, and a hope. Here is the honest walkthrough we send back, the actual sequence that turns a mood board into a pallet.
1. Pick the SKU shape before the fragrance
The number one mistake is starting with the fragrance and the label and picking a formula last. Retail buyers do not buy fragrances. They buy shelf-ready SKUs at a specific pack size that fits their planogram. Decide first whether you are a 16 oz spray, a 32 oz spray, a 1 gal refill, or a concentrate. That single decision drives your cost of goods, your freight, and your MOQ.
2. Choose library vs custom
A library formula is a proven chemistry we already run for other brands. You get shelf-tested pH, foam profile, and compatibility with your retailer's intake process, and you avoid six months of R&D. A custom formula is required only if your buyer will not accept a library base, for example a specific active claim, a novel enzyme, or a proprietary fragrance IP.
- Library formula: pilot run in 5-7 weeks, 2,000-unit MOQ, low risk.
- Custom formula: 12-16 weeks minimum, higher MOQ, higher R&D cost.
3. Get the three documents your retailer will ask for
Every real retailer intake, Target, HEB, Walmart, Amazon, big-box regional, requires the same three documents on the SKU: a Certificate of Analysis, a Safety Data Sheet, and a Technical Data Sheet. If your manufacturer cannot produce all three on request, you cannot sell into retail. Full stop.
4. Freight and pallet math is the actual margin
Concentrates ship dry. 1 gallon of concentrate replaces 32 gallons of RTU on a pallet. If you plan to sell direct to distributors or to institutional accounts, concentrate math is your margin.
5. What a real timeline looks like
- Week 0-1: brief and reference product review
- Week 1-2: library-formula samples in your hand
- Week 2-4: label proofing and packaging sourcing
- Week 4-7: first production run
- Week 7: pallets ship
"The brands that ship are the ones that resist adding a fourth SKU before the first one hits a shelf."
